Geranium pyrenaicum, otherwise known as hedgerow cranesbill or mountain cranesbill [1] is a perennial species of plant in the family Geraniaceae. It can be found on roadside verges and along hedgerows.
Hedge bindweed is an herbaceous perennial that twines in a counter-clockwise direction to a height of up to 3 m (10 ft). The leaves are arranged alternately on the spiralling stem; they are dull green above and paler below, simple and sagittate (arrowhead shaped), 5–10 cm (2–4 in) long and 3–7 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 4 – 2 + 3 ⁄ 4 in) broad.
It is a very common feature of hedgerows and scrubland in Britain and northern Europe. Some selections and cultivars have variegated or coloured leaves and other distinctive qualities, and are grown as ornamental plants. S. nigra f. porphyrophylla has dark maroon or black leaves, and pale pink flowers.
In the UK it is one of two native honeysuckles, the other being Lonicera xylosteum. It is often found in woodland or in hedgerows or scrubland. The tubular, two-lipped flowers, [4] creamy white or yellowish in colour, may be flushed with pink or red on the outside and in bud, and are carried in showy clusters at the ends of the shoots. [2]
