Black Star Riders is a hard rock band formed in December 2012. The band began when members of the 2011–2012 line-up of Thin Lizzy decided to record new material, but chose not to release it under the Thin Lizzy name.

Sam Wood (born 26 March 1989) is a British musician and songwriter, currently lead guitarist with hard rock bands Black Star Riders and Wayward Sons.After playing in several local bands in the Leeds area, he was asked to form Wayward Sons in 2017 by frontman Toby Jepson, and has since co-written and performed on three charting albums with the band.
He became a member of Thin Lizzy in 2011 and was also the lead guitarist and co-songwriter for hard rock group Black Star Riders from 2012 to 2018. Johnson has also released several solo albums and his songs have been recorded by many artists including Stevie Nicks and Carlos Santana.
In December 2012, he co-founded the Thin Lizzy spin-off band, Black Star Riders in order to release new material largely composed by Warwick with guitarist Damon Johnson. [17] Black Star Riders' first album All Hell Breaks Loose was released in May 2013. [18] In 2014, Warwick recorded a second album with the Black Star Riders.
The band was put on hiatus in December 2012, when all members formed Black Star Riders, [29] before returning in 2016 with Mikkey Dee initially announced on drums. [30] Without performing with the band, Dee was replaced three months later by Judas Priest's Scott Travis, as Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton also replaced Mendoza. [31]
Crane joined Black Star Riders in 2014, replacing their original bassist Marco Mendoza. [1] He has also worked with Vince Neil and Adler's Appetite. [2] In 2021, he filled in as the touring bass player for Warrant whilst Jerry Dixon took a break, and has joined them on the road again in 2024 for a run of summer dates.
A second Black Star Riders album, The Killer Instinct, was released in 2015, followed by touring throughout the UK and Europe during the remainder of the year. Gorham concentrated on a small number of Thin Lizzy festival appearances during 2016, and also began work on the third Black Star Riders album.
