While the areas have official use and definition, the color groupings are unofficial, and such "regions" may be defined differently, grouped differently, or not be used at all. The city of Chicago is divided into 77 community areas for statistical and planning purposes.
Lakeview East expanded borders to also include the Central Lakeview area which is home to Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. The boundaries of Lakeview are 1800 west to the west, Montrose to the north and Clark to the east north of Irving Park, but the rest is of Irving Park to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, and Diversey to the south.
This area became the racial center for blacks in the city and would later develop into the lower-income housed, majority African American area of the city. As a result of these policies and purchasing patterns, Chicago become one of the most racialized cities in the North. During the 1910s and 1920s housing conditions for blacks were dismal.
Measuring affordable housing is tricky. Different organizations look at different things: some at buying homes, others at renting apartments. Many U.S. studies, for example, only consider the average rent of a two-bedroom apartment, regardless of location or quality. This can make housing look more expensive than it actually is for many people.
