The submerged city of Pavlopetri (Greek: Παυλοπέτρι) is found in Vatika Bay, off the coast of southern Laconia in Peloponnese, Greece. It is about 5,000 years old, making it the oldest submerged city known in the world. [citation needed] Pavlopetri is unique in having an almost complete town plan, including streets, buildings, and tombs.
The city was flooded for the purpose of industrialization by the Chinese government in the year 1959 after a hydroelectric dam was required for the province of Zhejiang. According to the evidence found, the lost city was inhabited for centuries, but is now primarily used as an underwater tourist attraction by tourists and diving experts. [1]
