Therefore, the NIAC has been rebranded as the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), beginning the 2000–01 academic year. 2002 – Briar Cliff College (now Briar Cliff University) joined the GPAC in the 2002–03 academic year. 2003 – Morningside College (now Morningside University) joined the GPAC in the 2003–04 academic year.
Unfortunately, the conference proved to rather unsuccessful. From its founding, the GPAC champion received a berth in the University Cup tournament, however, the league was by far the least successful of any in Canada. Over the course of 13 tournaments, all GPAC teams combined to go 3–27 in tournament play.
The next season, due to the collapse of the since-renamed Great Plains Athletic Conference's (GPAC) hockey division, Canada West absorbed the three remaining schools. With the conference doubling its size in just two years, the playoff was expanded to include four teams for the first time in 1986.
