Wesley Lawrence Willis (May 31, 1963 – August 21, 2003) was an American musician and visual artist. Diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1989, Willis began a career as an underground singer-songwriter in the outsider music tradition.
The band was also noted for charming Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam. [citation needed] Due to conflicts between the Fiasco band's shows and Willis's solo keyboard shows, the band broke up while on tour in Ohio in 1996. Willis stated that the demons in his head worsened, causing him to constantly yell at the band unintentionally.
Towards the end Willis is shown playing with his band, the Wesley Willis Fiasco. Several of Willis' friends are interviewed, and they reminisce over how they met Willis and how they feel about him. Generally they are all sympathetic about his plight and it is stated he would likely be dead if he had not cultivated such a network.
Like the rest of Willis' music, each track on the album was recorded with a pre-programmed instrumental played on a keyboard, with Willis talking over it and then singing or yelling the title of the song as the chorus.
