On February 4, 1941, the section of SH 136 from the Moore–Potter county line to Stinnett was cancelled. On September 22, 1942, the route was extended east to Borger . The highway was extended to the Oklahoma state line on November 21, 1963, replacing most of FM 278 and all of FM 2216 .
Spur 487 was designated on January 30, 1970, from Loop 374 (now Bus. US 83) in McAllen south along Ware Road to US 83. On December 19, 1996, by district request, Spur 487 was cancelled and transferred to UR 2220 (now FM 2220) to provide a continuous route for FM 2220.

Spur 1966 was designated on February 23, 2012, as Spur 73, but to avoid confusion, it was changed to Spur 1966 on March 29, 2012. The number was chosen to honor the NCAA championship won by the 1965–66 Texas Western Miners men's basketball team as the road passes the university (now known as The University of Texas at El Paso ).
