Caustics from a glass of water Caustics made by the surface of water. In optics, a caustic or caustic network [1] is the envelope of light rays which have been reflected or refracted by a curved surface or object, or the projection of that envelope of rays on another surface. [2]
The rays refracted by a non-flat surface form caustics where many of them cross. Concentration of light, especially sunlight, can burn. The word caustic, in fact, comes from the Greek καυστός, burnt, via the Latin causticus, burning. A common situation where caustics are visible is when light shines on a drinking glass.

In typical use, a recording engineer might put a gobo between two musicians to increase the isolation of their microphones from each other. The origin of the term "gobo" is obscure, but is most likely short for "go-between".

Diffuse interreflection is apparent when light from one diffuse object is reflected onto another. Photon mapping is particularly adept at handling this effect because the algorithm reflects photons from one surface to another based on that surface's bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF), and thus light from one object striking another is a natural result of the method.
