The facility was built as a private house known as Wrightington Hall, which was completed in 1748 and extended in 1860. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] In 1918 the building was acquired for £16,473 by Lancashire County Council, who converted it, for the cost of £129,520, into a hospital. [ 3 ]

Originally a country house, later part of a hospital, it is in sandstone with a hipped slate roof. The building has a symmetrical east front of seven bays , the middle three bays recessed, a south front of five bays, and a west front of seven bays with a single-storey porch in front of the central three bays.
The site for the facility was a gift from Lord Lilford of Atherton Hall. [1] The facility itself, which was financed by a legacy from Miss Elizabeth Farnworth and by other subscribers, was completed in 1906. [1]
