Area code 303 is the original area code assigned to the entire state when the first nationwide telephone numbering plan was created in 1947. Today it only serves the greater Denver Metropolitan Area. Area codes 720 and 983 are overlay codes for today's 303 numbering plan area (NPA). Area code 719 serves Colorado Springs and southeastern Colorado.
The name of the Black Hawk Point post office was shortened to Black Hawk on February 8, 1871. The Colorado Central Railroad extended its line to the town in 1872. [ 10 ] Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876, [ 15 ] and the City of Black Hawk was incorporated on June 12, 1886. [ 5 ]
The northeastern and western portions of area code 303, including Fort Collins, Grand Junction, Vail and Aspen, were separated on April 2, 1995, and became area code 970. This split reduced 303 to the Denver-Boulder area. [3] With the 1995 split, 303 was the only Colorado area code that did not border another state.
State law may authorize casino gambling in specific cities or towns. As of 2015, three such localities -- Blackhawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek -- had been so authorized; all three towns had gambling legalized in 1991. Many other localities have been proposed as casino gambling sites since 1991, but all such proposals, as of 2015, have failed.
The casino opened on December 20, 2001, as the Black Hawk Casino by Hyatt. [4] At opening, it was the largest casino in Colorado, with 57,000 square feet (5,300 m 2 ) of gaming space, containing 1,332 slot machines , 16 blackjack tables and 6 poker tables.
