Camp North Bend, also known as Camp Waskowitz, is a 9 + 1 ⁄ 2 acre complex of wood-frame buildings. Constructed by and for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1935, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1] It is the only intact example of CCC work camp design and construction in King County, Washington. [2]
It first moved to Benbow Lakes in 1945 for one summer, [6] where it adopted the name Pacific Northwest Music Camp, then was held at Camp Waskowitz near North Bend from 1946 to 1948, and from 1950 to 1954.
The North Bend site, later reduced to 50 acres (20 ha), was deemed ideal because of its isolation from nearby residents and accessibility via Interstate 90. [12] The King County Council approved construction of the fire training academy in North Bend in January 1982 and work began in April 1983.
