Whitehall is one of Greenville’s oldest residences. It was built by Henry Middleton in 1813 and served as Middleton’s summer home until 1820. Middleton’s father, Arthur Middleton was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, president of Continental Congress, a US Senator, and a member of the SC House of Representatives.
The Works Progress Administration constructed the Greenville Airport in 1940 on land that was jointly owned by the city of Greenville and Pitt County. It was built in 1911–1912, and is a seven-story, U-shaped skyscraper with a buff-colored brick veneer over a steel frame. It was originally a 90-room hotel, and expanded by 1930 to 250 rooms.
