The 2024 Major League Baseball postseason was the playoff tournament of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the 2024 season.In each of the two leagues – National and American – the three division winners and three wild card teams (the remaining teams with the best records) participated in the postseason, for a total of twelve teams.
The Yankees, who had made the postseason six straight years from 2017–2022, are returning to the postseason after missing out in 2023. They played the Kansas City Royals (86–76), who qualified for the postseason as the fifth seed wild card entrant due to their head-to-head record versus the Detroit Tigers, the team they finished tied with.
Cleveland defeated New York in the ALDS in 1997 and 2007, while New York prevailed in the 1998 ALCS, 2017 ALDS, 2020 AL Wild Card, and most recently the 2022 ALDS. Both the Yankees and Guardians missed the postseason in 2023. In six head-to-head matchups during the 2024 regular season, the Yankees won four and the Guardians won two.
