Seaspan ULC evolved into a prominent marine transportation company serving the West Coast of North America with a large tugboat and barge fleet. Seaspan's barges haul forestry materials (logs, wood chips, hog fuel, lumber, pulp, paper and newsprint), minerals (construction aggregate and limestone), railcars, plus machinery, fuel and supplies to coastal communities.
In 1945, John Nuckles and Robert Roseberry purchased 50 acres (200,000 m 2) of land for site of the future race track. The track opened in 1946 as a dirt track for motorcycles. In 1950 the track was given lighting and in 1957, the track was paved for the first time as car racing, specifically stock car racing, became more popular.

The track was constructed in 1958 on a small rural potato farm owned by attorney Marvin Drucker. After hosting dirt track races in the 1950s and early 1960s, the course was paved in 1962. At the time the track was just over 1 mile (2 km) in length. In 1968, the track hosted its first 24 hour race, the 24 Hours of Nelson Ledges.
