The constituency was originally created in 1994, as part of an increase in the number of Gaborone constituencies from two to four. Since that is in general a stronghold for the opposition parties, first the BNF and later the BCP, becoming the seat of its leader, Dumelang Saleshando, from 2004 to 2014. [2]
Gaborone North was a safe seat for the BNF between 1984 and 2004. In the 1989 and 1994 elections it became the constituency where the BNF won by the largest margin. [ 2 ] In 2004 it became a competitive seat between the BDP and the BNF (and later the UDC ).
