Allosmerus is a monotypic genus of smelt. Its sole species, Allosmerus elongatus , the whitebait smelt , is an uncommon Northeast Pacific smelt, about which little is known. [ 1 ] Originally described as both Osmerus attenuatus and O. elongatus , these two species were determined to be conspecific in 1946. [ 2 ]
The catch is processed as soon as it comes on board and each species goes through a specific process to ensure quality; size-graded, whole frozen, filleted, IQF or headed and gutted . The result is a great quality product from the pristine and unpolluted sea around Iceland. In 2013 Brim’s five freezer trawlers caught a total of 33.500 tons.
The family of the true smelt consists of 12 species; 7 of which are native to California’s estuary and coastal waters. [1] The night smelt is one of the three exact (still existing) species in the Spirinchus genus, along with the Longfin Smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) and the shishamo (Spirinchus lanceolatus), native to northern Japan. The major small-scale fishing gears exploiting this species are the various coastal beach seines, small mesh size (10 mm) gill nets and lift-nets. Rarely it can be caught on very small hook, baited with small chunks of fish meat. Live Mediterranean sand smelt is excellent bait for many predatory species that feed on this gregarious fish.
The bait used is normally anything from the surrounding environment which the whiting naturally prey on, with polychaetes, bivalves, crustaceans such as prawns and crabs, cephalopods and small fish effective for most species. As with most species, live bait is known to produce better catches.
