The Pools of ʻOheʻo, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools, are a group of tiered pools in ʻOheʻo Gulch in Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii. They are located in the national park's Kipahulu area. [1] Despite its nickname, there are more than seven pools in the area. [2] The Hawaiian word "ʻOheʻo" translates to "something special." [3]
In 1980 the area bordering the reserve (Kīhei to Mākena) hosted 7,263 in a quiet rural area with miles of uncrowded beaches and a few small hotels. Today, Kīhei-Mākena is the second largest tourism area on Maui with a population of more than 22,400, in a 10 miles (16 km) strip of urban/suburban development.
Steamships provided passenger service around Maui and between the islands. Kīpahulu Landing allowed growers and ranchers to ship their goods to markets. The Kīpahulu Landing is private, and protected by The Nature Conservancy. [1] [2] The highway was closed from 2006 to 2008 due to earthquake damage. [3]
The week after the fires, Maui hotel occupancy rates dropped 27.6%. Over the past week, daily passenger arrivals to Maui dropped 80%. It’s all causing a strain for locals who depend on tourism.
