The Bangladesh Navy (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ নৌবাহিনী) is the naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, responsible for the defence of Bangladesh's 118,813 square kilometres (45,874 sq mi) of maritime territorial area from any external threat, the security of sea ports and exclusive economic zones of Bangladesh. Although Bangladeshi Navy personnel were trained on American soil since the 1970s, United States Navy instructors were instrumental in creating SWADS in late 2008. [4] SWADS was formally created in 2009 with 150 commandos and 200 divers recruited. [3] US Ambassador to Bangladesh Dan Mozena provided assistance in the creation of the unit. [3]

American defense cooperation is seen as a counterweight to regional powers India and China, as well as Russia. Joint exercises are held on a regular basis, particularly in the Bay of Bengal.
The Bangladesh Navy currently operates two submarines, five guided missile frigates, two patrol frigates, six guided missile corvettes, minor surface combatants of various type of offshore patrol vessels, coastal patrol boats, missile boats, minesweepers, auxiliaries, amphibious landing craft and rapid response boats.
The Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) is the main military intelligence outfit, responsible for intelligence gathering for all military purposes. [3] The DGFI also includes subdivisions specifically serving the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Air Force, but the agency itself is distinct and unified for all military intelligence functions.
