Rossiter-Little House is generally considered the oldest house in Sparta, Georgia. The present structure was built onto and around a log cabin (1797). The structure was built on the highest point in Sparta and used initially as a fort. Beneath the crawlspace of the present house, the original structure of the log foundation is still in place.

Jarvis House, also known as the Ira Jarvis House, is a historic home located near Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina.Located on the property are the contributing log building known as the log house, erected before 1850; the two-story 1880s Ira Jarvis House; and a detached stone cellar added in the early 1900s.
After the culmination of Burnside's North Carolina Expedition little attention had been given to North Carolina by the Confederate Army. In December 1862 a Union expedition from New Bern destroyed the railroad bridge at Goldsborough, N.C. along the vital Wilmington and Weldon Railroad.
