Sutton Civic Offices is a municipal facility in St Nicholas Way, Sutton, London.It is the headquarters of Sutton London Borough Council.In October 2022, Sutton Council announced plans to sell off the existing civic offices, the public library, and Sutton College, as well as the Gibson Road Car Park and Secombe Theatre, for housing. The London Borough of Sutton and its council were created under the London Government Act 1963, with the first election held in 1964. [4] For its first year the council acted as a shadow authority alongside the area's three outgoing authorities, being the municipal borough councils of Sutton and Cheam and Beddington and Wallington, and the urban district council of Carshalton.
It is owned by Sutton Council and managed by the Council together with the Friends of Sutton Ecology Centre. [71] [72] [73] It is an area of mainly open space where visitors can find out about wildlife habitats, alternative energy, recycling, composting, and organic gardening.
Sutton Library is situated close to the top of the town, near St Nicholas Church, and is part of a complex which contains the Civic Offices and Sutton College. It is the largest library in the borough. Opened in 1975, it was extensively refurbished in 2004 to meet changing customer needs.
