UTM has three campuses – the main campus is in Skudai, and was the first university in the state of Johor. It has an area of 1148 hectares and is the largest public university. The second largest was Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) with an area size of 1108.103 hectares. It is about 20 km north of the state capital, Johor Bahru.
The School is home to the Center of Built Environment in the Malay World (Malay: Pusat Kajian Alam Bina Melayu) or KALAM.The center was set up in June 1996 on the foundation of numerous intricate measured drawing works done by the students of the Department of Architecture out of concern for the rapid disintegration and elimination of Malaysia's architectural heritage.
It is located between Skudai and Pulai. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a 5-minute drive away from Taman Universiti, hence the name of the town. The town is dominated by civil servants (lecturers, office workers) and students from UTM. The university alone has 30,000 students who mostly live on campus but visit the town to shop.
The school started operation on 1 December 1994 with 1001 students and 46 teachers. Due to infrastructure problems and lack of buildings, the students attended classes at two temporary schools, Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Taman Universiti 2 and Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Taman Sri Pulai, SK Taman Universiti 1, and SMK Taman Universiti 3 with 644 and 349 students respectively.
Skudai is located just outside the northwestern border of Johor Bahru, along national highway 1. The eponymous Skudai River separates Skudai from Tampoi ward of Johor Bahru. Adjacent towns include Kulai (north), Iskandar Puteri (southwest), Pekan Nanas (west) and the Johor Bahru suburbs of Kempas (east) and Tampoi (southeast).
