Thonigala Rock Inscriptions (Sinhala: තෝනිගල සෙල් ලිපිය) are two Elu-language inscriptions engraved on a rock situated in Anamaduwa of Sri Lanka, written in Brahmi alphabet. Each inscription is about 100 feet long and each letter is about one feet in height and engraved about one inch deep in to the rock. [1]

Maharashtri or Maharashtri Prakrit (Mahārāṣṭrī Prākṛta) is a Prakrit language of ancient as well as medieval India. [5] [2] Maharashtri Prakrit was commonly spoken until 875 CE [1] [2] [3] and was the official language of the Satavahana dynasty. [6] Works like Karpūramañjarī and Gatha Saptashati (150 BCE) were written in it.
In 2022, the centre was inaugurated virtually by then Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa and Foreign Minister of India Dr. S. Jaishankar, who was on a three day visit to Sri Lanka. After its inauguration, the centre remained closed for nearly a year due to the economic and political instability in the country at the time.
The Marathi language, which evolved from Maharashtri Prakrit, has been the common language since the 9th century. The oldest stone inscriptions in the Marathi language date to around 975 CE, [1] and can be seen at the foot of the Lord Bahubali statue in the Jain temple at Shravanabelgola in modern-day Karnataka.
