St Mungo's Church, Townhead, Glasgow. Saint Mungo founded a number of churches during his period as Archbishop of Strathclyde of which Stobo Kirk is a notable example. At Townhead and Dennistoun in Glasgow there is a modern Roman Catholic church and a traditional Scottish Episcopal Church [16] respectively dedicated to the saint.

In 1947 he was transferred to St Mungo's Church in Alloa and ministered there until 1987. He lived the rest of his life in Victoria Square, Stirling. In 1978 he succeeded Very Rev John Rodger Gray as Moderator of the General Assembly, the highest position within the Church of Scotland. He was succeeded in turn in 1979 by Very Rev Robert Barbour.

Mungo built a monastic cell in the burial ground, and was buried in his church there in 614. His shrine in the Lower Church of Glasgow Cathedral was an important place of pilgrimage in the medieval period. [5] Little is known about the early church buildings, except that they would have been of timber and wattle construction.
