A typical requirement for indoor facilities is that they must provide 5 metres (16 ft) clearance above the highest diving board or platform, so that divers do not hit a ceiling structure. [ 1 ] The competitive sport of diving has included the 10-meter dive as an Olympic event since the 1904 Summer Olympics .
Stainless steel and tungsten dive weights for example are currently only obtainable by milling down a solid metal stock material in block or cylinder form, into the required shape. Direct casting of some of these materials in a foundry is possible, but would require high volume production for the casting processes to be cost effective.
Innovations for backplate and wing include redundant bladders, stainless steel backplates, lightweight soft nylon backplates, and 85 lb lift bladders. Some of these have improved safety or convenience. Dive Rite marketed the first commercially manufactured backplates in 1984, [12] and a wing for diving twin cylinders in 1985.
The word SCUBA was coined in 1952 by Major Christian Lambertsen who served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946 as a physician. [1] Lambertsen first called the closed-circuit rebreather apparatus he had invented "Laru", an (acronym for Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory Unit) but, in 1952, rejected the term "Laru" for "SCUBA" ("Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus"). The pressure vessel is a seamless cylinder normally made of cold-extruded aluminum or forged steel. [5] Filament wound composite cylinders are used in fire fighting breathing apparatus and oxygen first aid equipment because of their low weight, but are rarely used for diving, due to their high positive buoyancy.
A dive center is the base location where recreational divers usually learn scuba diving or make guided dive trips at new locations. Many dive centers operate under the guidelines of ISO 24803, [ 1 ] in which case the facilities must meet the ISO minimum standard for a service provider for recreational diving.
