The road was built from rock brought in from outside the area, as well as from Coquina rock found near Fort Fisher. The road opened up the area to automobile tourists from Wilmington and other parts of the state.
The western part of the island is mostly developed as a resort area, although the 290 acres (120 ha) and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of beach in the Perdido Key State Park are undeveloped, except for park facilities.
