William Rainey Harper College is a public community college in Palatine, Illinois. It was established by referendum in 1965 and opened in September 1967. It is named for William Rainey Harper , a pioneer in the junior college movement in the United States and the first president of the University of Chicago .
In 1973, the term "junior college" was changed to "community college" by statute, but one college (Joliet Junior College) in the system has retained the term "junior" in its name. Campus comes from the Latin: campus, meaning "field", and was first used in the academic sense at Princeton University in 1774. WHCM (88.3 FM) is a student-run campus radio station at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. [2] WHCM offers freeform music, news, talk and public affairs programming 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. WHCM is part of the college's Division of Liberal Arts and Department of Communication Arts.
The downtown campus is located at 801 West Fort Street in downtown Detroit. The Eastern Campus is located on Detroit's eastside. It is located at 5901 Connor Road just north of Warren Avenue, at the I-94 freeway exit. The University Square campus at 19305 Vernier Road in Harper Woods opened in January 2009.
