Neath Port Talbot (Welsh: Castell-nedd Port Talbot) is a county borough in the south-west of Wales.Its principal towns are Neath, Port Talbot, Briton Ferry and Pontardawe.The county borough borders Bridgend County Borough and Rhondda Cynon Taf to the east, Powys and Carmarthenshire to the north; and Swansea to the west.
Listing was begun by a provision in the Town and Country Planning Act 1947. Once listed, strict limitations are imposed on the modifications allowed to a building's structure or fittings. In Wales, [2] the authority for listing under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 [3] rests with Cadw.
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council (or simply Neath Port Talbot Council) is the local authority for the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, one of the 22 principal areas of Wales. The council was controlled by the Labour Party from its creation in 1996 until 2022, when Plaid Cymru and a group of independent councillors agreed to share power.
The South West Wales Corporate Joint Committee covers the four principal areas of Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea. The CJC's area is coterminous with that of the Swansea Bay City Region.

The district was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, which reorganised local government across Wales and England.The new district covered the area of the former municipal borough of Neath, along with most of Neath Rural District, excluding the Rhigos parish, which went to Cynon Valley district.
