This is the second hotel in Springfield to be named after the hometown boy and 16th President. Another 13-story hotel, known as the Abraham Lincoln Hotel (fondly nicknamed "Old Abe's"), opened in 1926 and closed for business only 38 years later in June 1964. The Urbana-Lincoln Hotel – Lincoln Square Mall is a historic building complex located at 300 South Broadway Avenue in Urbana, Illinois. The Tudor Revival style hotel was built in 1923. In May 1953, the Schimmel brothers purchased the 175-room Lincoln-Douglas Hotel in Quincy, Illinois. [10] The hotel was acquired from another in-state hotel family, C. Hayden Davis, his son, J. Hayden Davis, and their wives, of Springfield, Illinois. The Davis family owned the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield and the Hotel Quincy. [11]
At the time it was lost to fire, a notable resident of the third hotel was former Chicago mayor and former U.S. congressman John Wentworth. [3] Stephen A. Douglas died at the hotel on June 3, 1861.
