The history of integrated business planning can be traced back to sales and operations planning (S&OP), a process that balances demand and manufacturing resources. According to Gartner , there is a 5-stage maturity model for S&OP, and in this model, integrated business planning is denoted as Phased 4 & 5.
In the strategic plan, there is an item budget, evaluation method, and funding source/amount/timeline. The itemized budget is broken down into the years of the plan. Money is divided up into amounts that will be used for each year. The evaluation method collects data and disaggregates it to determine the outcomes.
Yet strategic management has much to do from month to month to ensure the business system develops strongly so as to take that opportunity quickly and safely. What is needed, is a set of tools that explain how performance changes over time, and how to improve its future trajectory – i.e. a dynamic model of strategy and performance.
