Old Hemp (1 September 1893 – May 1901) was a stud dog considered to be the progenitor to the Border Collie breed. He was owned by Adam Telfer, and was used as a working dog to herd sheep . His style was different from that commonly seen during his era, as he worked far more quietly than the other sheepdogs of the time.

The early history of the Smooth Collie, like that of many dog breeds, is a matter of speculation. Even the origin of the breed's name is unclear, variously claimed to describe the early shepherd dog's dark colour ("coaly") or derived from the name of a breed of sheep with black faces once commonly kept in Scotland ("Colley") or derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "useful."
Shep (1 May 1971 – 17 January 1987) was a Blue Peter dog, a Border Collie. He was bought by the BBC to replace Patch, one of Petra's puppies, born in 1965. Shep became the main Blue Peter dog when Petra died in 1977. Shep debuted on Blue Peter on the 16th September 1971 and was named a week later.
