The alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) is a large ground-dwelling squirrel, from the genus of marmots.It is found in high numbers in mountainous areas of central and southern Europe, [2] at heights between 800 and 3,200 m (2,600–10,500 ft) in the Alps, Carpathians, Tatras and Northern Apennines.
Endangered (EN) species are considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. In December 2019, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed 460 endangered avian species. [1] Of all evaluated avian species, 4% are listed as endangered. No subpopulations of birds have been evaluated by the IUCN.
Marmots are large rodents with characteristically short but robust legs, enlarged claws which are well adapted to digging, stout bodies, and large heads and incisors to quickly process a variety of vegetation. While most species are various forms of earthen-hued brown, marmots vary in fur coloration based roughly on their surroundings.
