The inner city company, Virginia Transit Company, was converted to become the government-owned Greater Richmond Transit (GRTC) in 1972. Privately owned commuter operators gradually discontinued services; the last privately owned suburban public route service was the Mechanicsville Bus Line route, which ended in June 2004.
The GRTC Pulse is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system serving the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. It was launched on June 24, 2018, through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Commonwealth of Virginia (including the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation and the Virginia Department of Transportation), the City of Richmond, and Henrico County.
In 2023, it was announced that GRTC would purchase four 60-foot (18 m) New Flyer XN60 articulated buses to relieve congestion on the route. GRTC plans to eventually replace all of the 40-foot (12 m) buses used on the Pulse with XN60 buses. The new buses were scheduled to go into service in 2025. [13]
On October 1, 1930, [14] the Bee Line routes began terminating at the newly constructed Jamaica Union Bus Terminal near its former terminus. The new bus terminal was located at Jamaica Avenue and New York Boulevard (now Guy R. Brewer Boulevard), adjacent to the now-closed Union Hall Street Long Island Rail Road station. There are connections to the Long Island Rail Road and AirTrain JFK at Jamaica station. [36] New York City Bus routes Q20A, Q20B, Q24, Q30, Q31, Q43, Q44 SBS, Q54 and Q56 and MTA Bus routes Q6, Q8, Q9, Q25, Q34, Q40, Q41, Q60 and Q65 also stop at the station. [37]
The Q10 Limited was one of several corridors proposed for conversion into a Select Bus Service route in the 2017 Bus Forward report released by the New York City Department of Transportation. [42] On January 8, 2018, the Q10 was rerouted in JFK Airport in order to provide a more direct route.
The other train originates/terminates at Richmond Main Street Station. Northbound trains provide direct service to Union Station in Washington, Pennsylvania Station in New York, and South Station in Boston, among other stops. [5] Since 2018, the station has also been a stop along the GRTC Pulse bus rapid transit line.
In a partnership with Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), PAT provides express service to Downtown Richmond and any other destinations accessible by GRTC. As of June 2009, in addition to the service to Richmond, Blackstone Bus Service offers and express route that travels from Blackstone, VA through Dinwiddie into the City of Petersburg.
