Lake Mendocino is a large reservoir in Mendocino County, California, northeast of Ukiah. It covers 1,922 acres (7.78 km 2) [1] and was formed by the construction of Coyote Valley Dam in 1958 (67 years ago) (). The lake and dam provide flood control, water conservation, hydroelectric power, and recreation. [2]
Map of California's interconnected water system, including all eleven reservoirs over 1,000,000 acre-feet (1.2 km 3) as well as selected smaller ones.. This is a list of the largest reservoirs, or man-made lakes, in the U.S. state of California.
A discharge measurement station is located 1,300 ft (400 m) upstream from the Russian River and 500 ft (150 m) downstream from the Coyote Dam, which impounds Lake Mendocino. At this point the maximum discharge of the East Fork Russian River before regulation by Lake Mendocino was 13,300 sq ft/s (74,000 m 2 /min), recorded on 21 December 1955.

Drone footage shot by storm chaser Brandon Clement showed the improvement in water level and snowpack in places such as Folson Lake, Lake Oroville and Donner Pass, since last summer.
Emergency response personnel were able to clean up approximately half of the 21,000 US gallons (79,000 L) spilled, and a fortuitous combination of Lake Mendocino reservoir inventory and late winter storms helped flush the remainder through the river and into the ocean before local water storage inventories were exhausted.
On May 7, the lake was at 114% of its historical average level. The so-called bathtub ring that clearly outlined the lake in 2022 — so stark it was visible from space — had disappeared by 2024.
Progress in forecasting methods has allowed more efficient or "smart" operation at certain California reservoirs, such as Lake Mendocino. If dry weather is forecast, water is allowed to be stored above the legal flood control limit, rather than being wasted downstream. This program is known as "Forecast Informed Reservoir Operations".
