The tournament begins with initial games played at four regional sites culminating with the semi-finals and finals played at a single site. [ 1 ] In setting up the tournament, the Championship Committee seeks to ensure "competitive equity, financial success and likelihood of playoff-type atmosphere at each regional site."

The 2018 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament was the national championship tournament for men's college ice hockey in the United States. The tournament involved 16 teams in single-elimination play to determine the national champion at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the highest level of competition in college hockey.
It began on March 17, 2006, and ended with the championship game on March 26. The quarterfinals were conducted at the homes of the teams considered to be higher seeds, although no seed was given for either team in two of the games. The Frozen Four was conducted in Minneapolis. A total of seven games were played.
