Automatic transmission fluid. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is a hydraulic fluid that is essential for the proper functioning of vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. Usually, it is coloured red or green to differentiate it from motor oil and other fluids in the vehicle.
The fluid drive fluid coupling was also used in conjunction with Chrysler's M6 Presto-Matic semi-automatic transmissions. The M6 was in reality a two-speed manual transmission with a conventional clutch mounted behind the same fluid coupling unit that was installed in straight Fluid Drive cars. The M4 Vacamatic had two forward speeds and reverse.
The TH400 was phased out for the 1980 models, when the A-727 replaced the TH-400 as the only automatic transmission option for both the SJ Wagoneer/Cherokee wagons and the J-10/J-20 trucks. Internally similar to the Chrysler A-727, the case was one-piece, cast with an AMC pattern bellhousing (not interchangeable with a Chrysler pattern A-727).
