DakshinaChitra, meaning "a picture of the south", [4] is a heritage village where the lifestyle of South Indians is displayed based on their states, through the architecture of the region and the living conditions and habits of the people. [5] It was founded by the Madras Craft Foundation (MCF), an NGO started in 1984, by Deborah Thiagarajan. [6]
The association was revived in 2006 and a new committee formed. It is now being carried forward by artists at the village [13] [14] [15] and an annually elected general council of members administers Cholamandal. The village continues to produce artists of great talent such as S. Ravi Shankar, A. Selveraj and Shailesh B.O. amongst many others.
Since 1995, Kuriakose has been involved in continuing and developing the design of DakshinaChitra Craft Village near Chennai based on the original site plan and sketches by Laurie Baker. Baker's sketches were translated into plans by him.
