The gull wing, also known as Polish wing or Puławski wing, is an aircraft wing configuration with a prominent bend in the wing inner section towards the wing root. Its name is derived from the seabirds which it resembles and from the Polish aircraft designer Zygmunt Puławski who started using this design in his planes.
The name was used for one of Hirth's earlier gliders and since the Gö 3 was a smaller version, it was called 'Mini' as a diminutive. It established several records, including the world altitude record of 6,687 m (21,939 ft) in 1938 in a thunderstorm. Richard du Pont and Chet Decker flew Minimoas to win the US Championships in 1937 and 1938. [1]
During the early 1930s there was a dearth of high-performance gliders that could be flown by relatively inexperienced pilots. The aircraft was named after the Zanonia macrocarpa tropical flowering plant, the seeds of which are good gliders. The designation indicates Ross-Stephens. The general layout of the glider was inspired by the Lippisch Fafnir II. [1] [2] The Zanonia is an all-wood design, with a mid-gull wing.
In 1939 a Gull, widely known as the Blue Gull became the first glider to fly from England to France, cross channel. The pilot was G. Stephenson. [1]The only Gull III to be built survived the war, and along with the Petrel was regarded as one of the prettiest sailplanes to come out of Slingsby's doors.
