Prior to this, the second and third floor of the South Building were used as the campus's library. With the creation of the HMALC, 5,800 square meters became free to expand the building further. A "phased approach" was taken for the renovations as this allowed them to tackle the re-allocation and construction of the South Building sequentially.

Building stairwell, third storey. The Bahen Centre for Information Technology is a building at the St. George campus of the University of Toronto. It is primarily used by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics.
The centre houses a number of different student services, including the main campus bookstore, career centre, and health clinic. The ornate building is located at the northwest corner of St. George and College Street streets in a building that was formerly the home of the Toronto Reference Library.
