Only WLOS will stay on Channel 13 and will not increase power or modify their pattern. All the Charlotte channels will change also, except WBTV, but they already have a very strong, omnidirectional full power signal. Unlike WLOS which mainly needs to modify their directional pattern which creates a null in Upstate SC.
Unfortunately the WLOS translator on Paris Mountain is very low power and not very effective indeed. But Sinclair also owns sister station WMYA-40 which has a stronger signal in the Upstate. They should simulcast the channel 13 signal for ABC on one of the WMYA subchannels and they would have stronger coverage in SC.
I receive WLOS 13 quite well year round from my location in Greer. I use an antenna in my attic with an amplifier. For antenna aiming, the WLOS tower is located at lat 35.4256, long -82.7569 (Google it in Google maps) and is at a height above average terrain of 853 feet. Line of sight, this is 44.77 miles to my house in Greer.
WLOS tower move is supposed to occur by the end of October, hopefully providing a stronger signal in the Upstate for Channel 13. Also translator moves are supposed to provide an improved alternative signal for WLOS filling in the gaps in the Upstate. Stay tuned in the fall for much needed improvements.
I miss the analog broadcasts when I could get them all. Now even 4 and 7 are iffy unless the weather is perfect.
And I agree, WYFF-4, WBTV-3, and WSOC-9 are much more professional news operations than WLOS-13. And WSPA-7 and WHNS-21 also do a good job. However, from a cosmetic standpoint, WLOS does have a very nice news studio, whereas WHNS needs an upgrade. WBTV and WSOC also have nice modern studios, with WBTV having the newest set.
At long last, the WLOS translator on Paris Mountain now appears to be operational, broadcasting on RF31. However, the signal may not yet be fully functional, as it appears to be very low power. Rescan your TV or manually input 31 to receive the translator channel, which will also appear as 13.1, 13.2, and 13.3 .
In some areas reception of 13-WLOS may be challenging. You may try a basic set of rabbit ears, and possibly add an amplifier. The Terk HDTVa is a good indoor antenna. At Walmart, the GE 34140 Ultra Pro Stealth Antenna works very good to receive 13 and is on sale on the Walmart website for $28.99. Order online and pick up in the store.
There are 2 very good High VHF antennas currently available, both small and large sizes designed to specifically receive channels 7 through 13: Stellar Labs 30-2475 and 30-2476, sold online by Newark/element 14. These Stellar Labs antennas are also ideal to receive 13-WLOS.
WSPA channel 7 has a strong VHF signal, but 13-WLOS is a bit problematic and more subject to interference. If you are using an indoor antenna, it should be placed in a room near the window nearest the direction of the broadcast signal towers. Walls will block the signal. For VHF channels such as 7 and 13, rabbit ears work best.
