  2. Most reliable used compact SUV for the long haul

    forums.anandtech.com/threads/most-reliable-used-compact-suv-for-the-long-haul...

So the compact SUV is what we like. The wife will drive this and she is very easy on vehicles, drives like an old lady. We need another vehicle that will last 10 years at least with good reliability. Going 5+ years without a car payment is a nice feeling.

4 year old SUV lasting another 10, isn't that long a haul. Some will need a repair or two in that period, but if you're not paying a premium for something specific only based on "odds" of a failure, that's just inherent in vehicle ownership, that most vehicles will last 20+ years if properly maintained and not totaled in an accident.

  4. Which lightly used small SUV / Crossover is for me?

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is one of the most reliable CUVs on the market according to Consumer Reports. Its was their most reliable in 2014 and the drivetrain hasn't changed. I bought two 2010 Lancer Sportbacks with the same 2.4 and CVT and I haven't had either one of them in for a warranty repair.

Right now I'm willing to consider: Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Hyundai, Mazda, Kia (Yeah, I know they are Korean - but willing to consider them as well) 2. High Reliability. The less often they need repairs, the better. 3. High Safety for family driving. 4. High MPG - mid 20's for city - at or above 30 for highway. 5.

Maybe something with easily upgradeable wheels? Seems like one easy way to add an extra inch (or more) of clearance. Is there another really common size above 16" that isn't drastically expensive? Is there any such vehicle, at about $20k? A large wagon/hatch (Outback maybe?) or some car based...

  7. USED CAR: Mazda Tribute or Ford Escape? - AnandTech Forums

    forums.anandtech.com/threads/used-car-mazda-tribute-or-ford-escape.2330053

The Escape has also been plagued with problems. Probably Ford's least reliable vehicle. There's been a ton of recalls across all three generations. Not for minor stuff either. If you're looking for a compact SUV, I'd probably look at a RAV4 or CR-V. Tons of them available used and they seem to hold up pretty good.

  8. Any small SUVs (other than Jeep) have true 4WD?

While car shopping she got me to help her and one of the things I noticed is small SUV's are pretty much all automatic AWD. You have to go up to the mid-size for true control, like with the Highlander. And actually I think the new Highlanders are more like big RAV 4's than small real SUV's.
