The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it.

Paris Township, Portage County - northwest corner; The village of Craig Beach is located in northwestern Milton Township, and the unincorporated community of Lake Milton lies at the center of the township. Both are resort communities which developed around a reservoir which is now the primary feature of Lake Milton State Park.
In the township the population was spread out, with 21.9% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 30.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years.
Milton Township was reduced to six miles square when Clear Creek Township was organized from the north half of Milton Township on 15 October 1818. [5] Upon the formation of Ashland County in 1846, Milton Township was again divided, four columns of sections on the east being included in Ashland County, the other two columns remaining in Richland.
The township was created by the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas on May 12, 1818, from Madison Township and Pittsburgh Township. At the time, it also included the southern tier of modern Shelby Township running from an east–west line between sections 33 and 33 Twp. 4N Range 11E to the Switzerland county border.
