Dinanath Sen, Prabhaticharan Roy, Anathbandhu Mallik, and Brajasundar Kaitra founded Dhaka Brahma School in 1858, and the university's history began there. The name Jagannath School was given by Kishorilal Chowdhury, the Zamindar of Baliati in Manikganj, who took over the school in 1872 and renamed it after his father.

Front view of JB college Different view of JB College. It was named Upper Assam College at first and later Jorhat College on 4 September 1930. On 25 June 1938, during a meeting under the then president, Chandradhar Barooah, it was renamed to the present Jagannath Barooah College in recognition of the commodious building 'Borpatra Kutir' along with the previous landowner, Murulidhar Barooah.

Among them are Chief Ministers Profullah Chandra Ghosh (of West Bengal) and Ataur Rahman Khan (of East Bengal), as well as the first Bengali doctorate Nishikanto Chatterjee and the first Indian Doctor of Science Aghornath Chatterjee, who was the father of Sarojini Naidu.
