The installation name changed to Defense General Supply Center to match its new logistical mission. In 1977 Defense Supply Agency became Defense Logistics Agency. In 1986, depot operations were separated from inventory control point functions and a separate command was established on the site: Defense Distribution Depot Richmond.
The Naval Supply Systems Command was formed in 1962 under the name of the Naval Fleet Material Support Office (FMSO), later being renamed to Navy Supply Information Systems Activity (NAVSISA) and ultimately becoming Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) in 1966. As of June 2023, Rear Admiral Kenneth W. Epps assumed the role of Commander for NAVSUP.
NAVSUP BSC began as the U.S. Navy's Fleet Material Support Office (FMSO) on Jan. 15, 1962 under the command of Capt. I. F. Haddock. The command's original mission was to manage Navy-owned retail stocks of medical, general, and industrial materials bought and controlled by the newly established Defense Supply Agency.
