The early Sangam poetry diligently follows two meters, while the later Sangam poetry is a bit more diverse. [ 26 ] [ 27 ] The two meters found in the early poetry are akaval and vanci . [ 28 ] The fundamental metrical unit in these is the acai (metreme [ 29 ] ), itself of two types – ner and nirai .
Nedunalvadai contains 188 lines of poetry in the akaval metre. [4] It is a poem of complex and subtle artistic composition, its vividness and language has won it many superlatives, including one by the Tamil literature scholar Kamil Zvelebil, as "the best or one of the best of the lays of the [Sangam] bardic corpus". [4]
These poems deal with the various aspects of the courtship between the hero and the heroine. The poems are set in various landscapes (Tinai - திணை). [2] Each poem is subdivided and formatted into pattu or tens, a style found in much of Tamil literature such as Tirukkural, Bhakti movement poetry and elsewhere.
Yet a general harmony prevails throughout these eight anthologies. The tone and temper of the age is reflected in all their poems with a singular likeness. They were moulded according to certain literary conventions or traditions that prevailed in the Sangam age. Yet they reveal the individual genius of the poets who sang them.

The Eighteen Greater Texts anthology contains 2,381 poems including the ten larger works belonging to the Ten Idylls collection. These poems are attributed to 473 poets.
