As well as being an important building for entertainment in Rochester, the Rochester Opera House is a hub for political activity in the city. The opera house has hosted speeches by numerous politicians and famous individuals including Pete Buttigieg , Barack Obama , [ 7 ] John McCain , [ 8 ] Bill and Hillary Clinton , [ 9 ] and Donald Trump .
The opera house was built by Charlie Thrasher. [2] It began showing vaudeville and traveling theatrical performance and, later, movies. In the 1920s, the opera house installed the proper equipment to show sound films. The building underwent renovations in the 1990s.

Real Time Opera (RTO) is a performing arts organization dedicated to the production of new opera. Founded in 2002, it is based in Contoocook , New Hampshire and Oberlin , Ohio and produces opera across the United States, engaging professional singers and a range of instrumental ensembles for performances at a wide variety of venues.
