He founded the weekly West Virginia Hillbilly (1957-1980) and compiled a definitive 51-volume encyclopedia of West Virginia history and culture.

Lewisburg Historic District is a national historic district located at Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 112 contributing buildings and are representative of the development and evolution of Lewisburg, over a period of more than two centuries (1763-1977).
Each film in the series is set in various locations throughout rural West Virginia and follows the story of a group a travelers who get lost in the backwoods of the Appalachian mountains. Stereotypes of Appalachia are most depicted in the film as the inbred and cannibalistic monsters who hunt and kill the group of travelers throughout each movie.
