The family temporarily lost control of the collection during the 1993 FAG Kugelfischer financial crisis. In 1997 Schäfer's heirs established a foundation to protect the recovered portion of the collection, and in 2000 the Museum Georg Schäfer opened to the public. Not all of the foundation's paintings are housed in the museum.
