Prior to the construction of dams, open navigability was never established throughout the Columbia.This was an important difference from the Mississippi-Ohio River system, which in the right season, and with a canal around the Falls of the Ohio, was navigable from New Orleans to Pittsburgh, an enormous distance.

The Willamette River flows northwards down the Willamette Valley until it meets the Columbia River at a point 101 miles (163 km) [2] from the mouth of the Columbia. In the natural condition of the river, Portland was the farthest point on the river where the water was deep enough to allow ocean-going ships.
Also colocated with the station is the oldest lighthouse on the Northwest Coast of the United States, Cape Disappointment Light, marking the north side of the Columbia River Bar. Less than two miles (3 km) to the northwest is North Head Light, which provides a beacon for the northern approaches to the Columbia River Bar.
The park comprises the 400-acre (160 ha) Columbia Park East in Kennewick, and the adjacent 50-acre (20 ha) Columbia Park West in Richland. [2] [3] [4] Together, the parks function as a single 450-acre (180 ha) park with 4.5 miles (7.2 km) of shoreline along the Columbia River. The park is a popular destination for residents of the Tri-Cities.
