Ball was born in Orange, Texas, into a musical family.Her grandmother and aunt both played piano music of their time and Ball started piano lessons when she started school, [4] and showed an early interest in New Orleans style piano playing, as exemplified by Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, and James Booker.

The Dixie Cups continued to tour as a trio with another New Orleans singer, Beverly Brown, replacing Joan Johnson who became a Jehovah's Witness and left her music career. [3] Brown, who had recorded two solo discs in the early 1960s, stayed as the third member until the early 1980s when she became ill and was replaced by Dale Mickle.
She died of a heart attack, in March 1963, at the sisters' Lafon Nursing Home in New Orleans [9] and was buried in the city at Saint Louis Cemetery No. 3. [10] Woody Allen included her version of "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" on the soundtrack of his 2013 film Blue Jasmine. [11] Her half-sister, Edna Hicks, was also a blues singer. [2]
