There are eight parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence.
An adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives can be attributive, appearing before a noun (e.g., “a red hat”), or predicative, appearing after a noun with the use of a linking verb like “to be” (e.g., “the hat is red ”). Adjectives can also have a comparative function.
Adjectives describe or modify nouns or pronouns, e.g., gentle, helpful, small. Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, e.g., almost, gently, helpfully, someday. Prepositions relate nouns or pronouns to other words in a sentence, e.g., about, at, down, for, of, with.
Some words can be used as either a noun, verb, adjective, or an adverb. Usually though, you’ll have to change the endings of the words depending on how you want to use them. The following chart has some examples of words that you can change to be different parts of speech.
